The Emotion of Light
Lighting is more than just illuminating your subject; it’s about creating a mood and telling a story. Different lighting setups can evoke different emotions and atmospheres in your images.
In our recent live photography workshop, we examined how various lighting scenarios affect the same model, demonstrating the profound impact of light on the feel of an image.
Soft Light with Shadows
We started with an image featuring extremely soft light that still had shadows on one side. This type of lighting is gentle and flattering, providing a smooth transition between light and shadow.
It’s perfect for portraits where you want to convey warmth and approachability. However, the presence of shadows adds depth and dimension, giving a natural and realistic feel.
Shadowless Light
Next, we looked at an image with completely shadowless light. This setup is achieved by using a large, diffuse light source close to the subject. While it eliminates harsh shadows, it can sometimes make the image appear flat.
This kind of lighting is ideal for beauty photography where even skin tones and soft details are desired.
High-Contrast Light
Then we explored high-contrast light with strong shadows. This setup, characterised by a more aggressive light source, creates a dramatic and mysterious look.
The density of the shadows adds a sense of intrigue and intensity, perfect for creating images with a powerful emotional impact.
Multi-Pocket Lighting
One interesting technique we discussed is multi-pocket lighting, where small highlights are strategically placed around the subject. This method creates a mysterious atmosphere by keeping most of the image in shadow, with just enough light to hint at details.
It’s a great way to add complexity and interest to your photographs.
Practical Demonstrations
To illustrate these concepts, we conducted practical demonstrations using our model Evie. We showed how a point light source, similar to sunlight on a clear day, casts sharp shadows.
By moving the light around, we demonstrated how the position of shadows changes and how it affects the natural look of the image.
Manipulating Shadows
We also explored how to manipulate the density of shadows using negative fill and reflectors. By introducing poly boards, we increased the shadow density on one side of Evie's face, creating a more dramatic look.
Conversely, using a white reflector board, we bounced light into the shadows, softening them and brightening the overall image.
This technique is crucial for balancing light and achieving the desired mood in your photos.
Correctly positioning the Softbox
Another key aspect we covered was positioning the softbox. By positioning the softbox correctly, we ensured that light reached further around the face, creating a softer and more even illumination.
This technique leverages the inverse square law, where the light intensity decreases with distance, resulting in beautifully wrapped light around the subject.
The Role of Rim Lighting
Rim lighting, achieved by placing lights behind the subject, added a beautiful edge light that accentuated Evie's features. This technique is perfect for adding separation between the subject and the background, making the subject stand out.
Adjusting the intensity and placement of rim lights allowed us to fine-tune the image's overall look and feel.
