Working to a Brief: Assignment 6 LAUNCH

Live On: Thursday 23rd September 2021 - 15:00 BST / 10:00 EDT

In this live show, Karl announces the brief for our sixth ‘Working to a Brief’ assignment.

This brief asks for a flat-lay image of fruit-pie ingredients to be used for various advertising purposes.

In the show, he explains the finer details of the assignment, describing the required composition, mood, and lighting. He also refers to the art director-style sketch and various existing images intended to serve as inspiration.

As he takes you through this particular brief, Karl offers some general tips for working to commercial briefs. He also answers members’ broad questions about commercial photography, as well as about specific details of this fruit-pie brief.

One of the most commonly asked questions relates to cherries and blueberries, which may be difficult to source in some locations. Karl says that substituting those fruits with something similar is acceptable if cherries and blueberries are out of season or otherwise unavailable locally.

Karl offers a clarification regarding the paper on which the butter must sit. The butter, he says, can simply sit on top of its unfolded wrapper.

In response to a question about whether the flour should take the form of a thick layer or a light dusting, Karl suggests that a light dusting is likely to be preferable for the image as a whole.

Regarding the eggs, Karl says that mixing colours would be a distraction, so make sure both eggs have the same colour. However, they can be any naturally occurring colour (e.g. white, brown, etc.).

Since ‘napkin’ can mean different things in different parts of the world, Karl clarifies that the napkin should be made of cloth, not paper.

Submissions are open now! The deadline for this brief is 13:00 BST / 08:00 EDT on Wednesday 20th October 2021. All submissions will be reviewed in a follow-up live show on 10th November 2021.
