The Fundamentals of Product Photography Lighting
Master the foundations of product photography lighting and creative control.
This class is the perfect starting point for anyone who wants to understand how lighting really works in product photography, so you can stop guessing and start creating with confidence.
Whether you’re using a single light at home or working in a fully equipped studio, you’ll learn the core principles that allow you to produce clean, professional product images consistently.
Through a series of practical demonstrations, we’ll strip things back to the essentials. You’ll see exactly how effective product photography setups can be created in simple spaces – at your dining table, in a spare room, or even in the garage.
In this class you’ll learn:
-
Three versatile product setups you can recreate at home
-
How to work with light instead of fighting it
-
How to create and control gradient lighting
-
How to get the most out of small studio spaces
By the end of the course, you’ll understand how light behaves – and how to shape it to achieve the look you want. You’ll leave with the knowledge and confidence to light products properly, wherever you’re shooting.

Thank you Karl, I’m so excited to try it by myself.

I am trying to source the display cubes like the ones you use in the Chanel lipstick shoot – is it better to get the glossy black or the matt ones ? Do you have a source in the Uk where you purchase them? thank you
I’ve emailed you but Matt is better and I get the made locally at my Sign Service (plastics) company.
Hi Karl,
What is the attached to the front of the the Siros at 00:20 ?
thank you
Hi, it’s just a standard reflector that comes with them or it might be the slightly longer one.
I am so excited for this one Karl!
Karl, I have been learning through your product and food courses for a while now and I am so grateful to have come across Visual Education – you are the best educator around – the way you explain concepts so clearly , your breath of courses, your enthusiasm and the way you respond to sometimes silly questions from the audience with humour . You are not holding back on anything – I love it all! This class is outstanding and I look forward to more content – The onion project and now this class have reinforced lighting concepts . I am learning so much from you ! A huge thank you Luciana
I enjoyed this lesson; it was very practical and objective, proving that it’s not the quantity of equipment that makes the difference in achieving an aesthetically pleasing result, but rather knowledge about light and composition.
Very informative!

It seems your great pictures rely not only on pre-visualisation of composition of objects, but as well on pre-visualisation of the lighting. For the realisation of such photos knowledge on backgrounds, reflective properties of objects and, in particular, being familiar with lighting equipment and its possibilities is required. This takes a lot practice.
I am still learning
