Macro lens vs extension tube comparison shoot
Extension tubes are a cheaper alternative to using a decent macro lens, but how far can you push extension tube photography and how do the results compare? In this video, Karl explains what extension tubes are and why they can be a great alternative to a dedicated macro lens if you’re on a tight budget. He also demonstrates a detailed comparison between extension tubes and macro lenses on two different cameras at various apertures to help you make up your own mind as to which is actually better.

Hello Professor Karl, good evening. First of all, I would like to thank you for your generosity in sharing your knowledge so openly and professionally. On the other hand, I am dedicating myself to product photography. My equipment for now is a Sony A7RV camera with a 24.70 G Master II lens. I have been thinking about whether a Sony 90 mm Macro lens would be better for my purpose in product photography. Thank you for your recommendation. Nito
Hi Nito, thank you for your comments. Yes 100% the 90mm Macro lens is an excellent lens for product photography and its close focusing abilities will be valuable to you. The 24-70 is not really suited to product photography other that larger items such as furniture or vehicles but again if you have the space and can move back far enough then the 90mm is a much better choice for the perspective and reduced distortion.
Thank you, Professor, for your response. You are always so kind and diligent in helping your students. So I will take that path. I will look for the 90 mm macro lens and continue with my product photography, always looking for better results. God bless you. Nito desde Weston Florida.
Not sure as a beginner that I understand the F etc.. Where would I look to find more information on this?
Hi, you will find all of that in the Photography Essentials section.
Thank you for the info.
