Member Spotlight & Your Q&A
We’ll be shining a light on another wonderful Visual Education member, diving into their inspirations, where they learnt their skills and what their workspace looks like! We’ll also be taking your questions, as well as suggestions on what Karl should shoot in our next live show.

Hi! Knowing that it’s not feasible to carry out live and in real time, I would love to see a car photoshoot in an outdoor location (ideally in an urban environment) with a human model — from the initial concept and idea development, to finding the right location, and of course, the actual execution. It’s certainly a challenging achievement, but I’ve seen something similar on your page (the one with the red dress), which I believe was even more difficult than this.
Hi, thanks for the feedback. We are planning to do a motorcylce on location at twilight or at night and using light painting techniques. A car on location in an urban environment is generally undertaken in CGI these days in the same way our instructor Ethan does: https://www.ethandavis.co.uk/ we have some more classes on this from Ethan in our CGI section and some more coming in July. Often the urban scene is photographed and measurements taken and surrounding images taken as a reference for reflections. The car is then 3d modeled and put into the scene/photographs and the surrounding reflections mapped on to the car. In the meantime this class might be of interest to you: https://visualeducation.com/class/dynamic-car-shoot/
Thank you for the show, always relaxing to watch. I sent my entry in the brief challenge very early – and here’s why: I missed the last challenge because I was continually postponing, and then it was too late. I should have done at least a quick snap with my phone to get at least some points – I regretted it after watching the evaluation show. I wanted to make it too perfect, and I ended up missing it. With a baby and child, you can’t always plan, so I just jumped in as quickly as I could to make sure that I wouldn’t miss the deadline again, especially with the summer holidays coming 😀
I do have an idea for a video, probably not a live show though. I’d love to see the whole process of creating commercial photos, from the moment when you are first contacted to the revisions and work being accepted by the client. It would be really interesting to see all the communication behind the photos and all the decisions being made (by who, when, why…), and the preparation, resolution of unexpected problems, dealing with the client’s feedback, etc. There are many behind-the-scenes videos on the platform, but none of them go into this depth.
Hi, OK thanks for you feedback we will keep that in mind and see if a client will allow us to do so.
Hi, yes that makes sense, I remember how crazy it was when my kids were very young!
Excellent show! I didn’t get to watch it live. I wanted to ask a question about a live shoot of a group of people. I have a big family and my composition skills are lacking.
Also, I would be intrigued to see how you would tackle lighting a group of people.
Now I have 21 people in my family and I’m not talking about taking a group of all 21. I’m talking about breaking them up into individual families. Each family is about 4 to 5 people, six in one case.
Hey and I also just wanted to say that I’m a big fan and I’ve been a long time subscriber and I shall continue to be one. Thank you Karl!
