The Brief
This brief is all about clarity and colour!
Our imaginary client is a new brand of high quality home printers that are renowned for their crystal clear print and colour reproduction. They are running a teaser campaign of various high quality super sharp, punchy images that will help set the mood of what their printers are capable of producing.
There will be a series of images that represent their ethos, each will be focused around, clarity, fidelity, perfect colour, perfect gradients, sharpness, detail etc etc.
You will need to create the first image for the campaign.
The first image they have requested a lipstick shot similar to the brief sketch. The lipstick can be any brand and it doesn’t matter if the brand name is visible or not visible. The key thing that the client is looking for is the quality of the image and the ethos above. The arrangement of the product can even be different to this sketch as long as the photographer delivers an image that matches the brands aspirations above.
Some key requirements to this image are highlighted in the brief sketch such as:
- Vertical format for train station and subway posters
- Ultra sharp shadow edge (no soft fuzzy shadows)
- Shadow density to be light to medium (no black or very dark shadows)
- Luxurious gradient lighting on key parts of the product
- Vibrant colour in the selected areas
- White to off white background but not going too grey (it still needs to feel fresh and bright)
- Two areas must include an object of colour, this will be left to the photographer to determine but it could be a squirt of makeup liquid, makeup powder, a piece of ribbon, a smear of lipstick or makeup. It is for the photographer to work out what balances best in the image in these areas.
- The two areas of colour may be best to be the same as the lipstick nib for simplicity of composition or they may be better with alternative colours, again it is for the photographer to create the perfect image.
Some of the copy for the advertising posters and campaign may be ‘Hyper realistic images at home’ or ‘Prints like you’ve never seen before’ - these will be confirmed later but it is therefore recommended that you deliver the approximate crop area so the client can appreciate how their copy will fit the advertising.

Dear Karl and the team,
you never cease to amaze me — I was wondering what will be this announcement with the changed format of competition, briefs etc. (I was worried that you gonna drop it all together), but this is even beyond my wildest imagination! 🙂 Kudos to you, great job with the all year competition, looking forward to all the work because they really inspire me to hone my craft (and love!) of photography!
Best,
Sasa
Thank you Sasa, much appreciated!
