Lovely technique! I will try it for my self but have to ask could the layer in Screen mode be restricted to just the highlight areas using the Blending Options -> Blend If, by adjusting the Underlying Layer?
I love the glowy light, another piece in the visual arsenal!

    1. Hi, and thank you. Is there a ‘blend if’ option that can be combined with an already selected layer mode? If so please tell me more!

There is a “blend if” option that works in conjunction with blending modes, adjustment layers etc. If you right click on the layer it self and open Blending options at the bottom there are two sliders that say Current Layer and Underlying Layer. You need the Underlying slider and by dragging the shadows or highlights you efectively reduce the effect or the whole layer to the shadows or highlights. Also with alt or option on the keyboard you can split each “knob” into two and feather that range so that it is more subtle. I understand it like that: Show this layer in screen mode for example but in regards to the layers beneath show it just in the shadows or just in the highlights. That may exclude the need of the additional darkening and just leave the effect in the highlights and midtones like you said in the tutorial.

        1. Hi, thanks for that info. When I get some time next week I will have a look and see what I can do with it.

  2. Very beautiful and interesting lesson that shows us how often the simplest things are the best but also the most ‘difficult’ to make work. The post-production part then was very interesting, with that tip about the layer in screen blend mode and how to manage it. Thank you so much Karl and, given the date, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a fantastic 2026 to you and your entire team!

I was much impressed by this session. I learned quite a bit: precision of shadows (strength and direction), enhancement of contrast, the trick with the black foam board to get a dark line, use of the mirrors and so much more….
    Thank you, Karl

  4. Perfect Karl, thank you.. Just what I wanted to see, there was me thinking I would need a massive area for loads of lights!
