Rocks & Sea Fashion Shoot

Portrait photography  in harsh midday sunlight with just one light (Broncolor Stelos) – that’s the challenge in this shoot. I set out to see if it’s possible to light models against the sun using a single off-camera flash with a Para modifier.

By deliberately underexposing the ambient by up to four stops, I created dramatic contrast – deep skies, textured rocks, and moody atmosphere – while keeping my models perfectly lit. To add even more impact, I used targeted bursts with a reflector and grid to highlight shadow details, building a look that feels like it was created with multiple lights.

This wasn’t just about creativity – it was also about the practicalities of one-light portrait photography outdoors: power, consistency, handling in a breeze, and whether the battery could keep up after hours of shooting.
