Balancing Daylight, Flash, a Model and Extreme Tides

I wanted to see what would happen if I took a full studio lighting setup into a very unusual and challenging outdoor environment – under a harbour. In this behind-the-scenes fashion shoot, I put the brand-new Broncolor Stelos through its paces.

Working on location, I’m often battling strong sunlight, deep shadows, and tricky reflections. Balancing flash with ambient light is one of the biggest challenges for any photographer outdoors. I was keen to see how the portable, lithium-powered Stelos would handle the job.

In this video, I’ll show you how I used it to:– Balance flash with natural light for the perfect mix– Control shadow areas so the model stands out beautifully– Work with the Parabolic 88 to add depth and shape– Fine-tune exposure so I keep the mood of the harbour while still lighting the subject

You’ll get to follow me step-by-step and see how the Stelos performed in real-world conditions.

If you’re into fashion photography, portraiture, or just want to see what it takes to get studio-quality results outside the studio, you’ll find plenty to take away here. Stick around to the end to see the final images.
