You might have heard of composition and a variety of rules and techniques that you should apply for good composition. But while the rules are there to guide us they are also there to be broken, the most important rule is ‘do people want to look at my paintings, does my work hold their attention’ – that is the ultimate goal of any artist.

There are many factors that contribute to the success of keeping a viewers attention, it might be aesthetics, narrative, position, dynamics or simply colour but more often than not it is a combination of these things and many more.
