‘Cold’ Competition Winners
It took some time to make a decision on this particular competition, in part because there was a valuable prize up for grabs but also to ensure that the theme ‘cold’ was appropriately described in the finalists images.
As often is the case there were many images that were submitted that appeared to have nothing whatsoever to do with the theme and we always find it bewildering why this happens?
In making our decision the team and I had to really think hard about what the word ‘cold’ invokes and what it really means as an emotion, a colour, and as an experience. We also need to ensure, of course, that the images projected that feeling but were also visually and aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
1st Prize
Gary Collyer
Gary’s image of a distant church in a snow and ice covered landscape ticked all the boxes for us. The photograph utilises beautiful light and invokes the emotion and memories of an uncomfortable distant walk on an icy road in sub zero conditions.
Congratulations Gary - Enjoy your new kit!
2nd Prize
Gaetano Lucariello
Gaetano’s image of frozen trees in an icy mist also impressed us with its sense of stillness and tranquility. The bite of winter ‘freeze framed’ a scene that would be buoyant with life in the spring or summer. The ultra soft light from the cold mist creating a shadowless scene making it even hard to interpret the undulation of the land and only the turbidity of the air providing a sense of depth to the scene.
3rd Prize
Krzysztof Czernecki
Krzysztof Czernecki’s excellent product shot of a product called ‘Sub Zero’ creatively captured in blocks of ice with excellent use of light, set and props comes in third.
Highly Commended
Two images made it to our highly commended choices, the first is Joel Hauschild's photograph of blueberries, the cold colour blue and the swirling chilling mist associated with liquid nitrogen comes to mind.
Also, Andrew Paquette’s excellent photograph of a ‘diner’ in the snow delivered a cinematic experience to the viewer but didn’t quite tap into the emotion of ‘cold’ quite as strongly as some of the others winners.
Comments
Woohoo! Thank you for the “highly commended”. This means a lot to me to have some honor on your site. Love all you do here.
