This week's challenge is...

Portrait photography with shadows

Light Painting

Key to this week’s challenge is an understanding of flash duration. Once you understand this, you’ll be able to apply this technique to any subject of your choice, whether it be architecture at night, models in the studio or even product photography.

Light painting is a great way to produce some very creative images, and it isn’t as difficult as it may seem. But before you start, there are a few things that may help. Firstly, make sure you use the best light source for your ‘painting’. Powerful torches work well if you’re shooting outdoors, while LED lights may work better indoors. Next, think about your photo before you start shooting. Test your shot before and figure out elements like composition and background (and make sure you use a tripod). Finally, think outside the box. There are many, many ways you can get creative with light painting, so don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things.

Below are a few classes that will help you for this week’s challenge.
