Night Skies

Whether you’re in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere, now is the perfect time to get out with your camera to try your hand at night photography.

This is a great genre of photography as you don’t really need anything other than your camera and a tripod (a shutter release cable can be handy, but if you don’t have one of these you can set a timer delay on your camera).

When it comes to shooting at night, it’s not really that different from photographing in daylight. Keep in mind the basic principles of exposure (covered in our ‘Introduction to photography’ course) and look for interesting compositional elements (remember, the rule of thirds isn’t always the most important composition rule).

Whether you’re shooting from your garden, a city centre, or the countryside, remember to work safely. Take a torch with you to see where you’re going, wear reflective clothing and, if you can, take a friend with you.
