Octabox

Jonas Sheck

Jonas Sheck’s image certainly fulfils the brief of this competition on ‘reflections’ but it also brings several additional elements that make this a truly engaging image.

At first glance the scene looks like an ordinary view, until your perceptions are double checked by half of a missing bicycle wheel. Upon further inspection you realise that you are looking at a reflection in the side of a building that is mirroring part of another scene that is out of view.

Initially your brain tries to understand the reflection of the group of people as being the same group in the main view, only to realise this is another trick of the composition. All in all the image becomes extremely engaging with elements looking as if they were part of the natural scene such as the hills, lake, grass, path and paving slabs whilst others make you question the validity of what is presented.

Daniel Honegger

Daniel Honegger’s photograph of a girl laying in water has been well executed with dynamic use of lighting that is suited to the scene presented. As well as the disrupted reflection in the water which adds an interesting visual, the reflections of light from the water onto the subjects face also make the image more interesting and enchanting.

3rd Prize

Gel pack

Andy West

Andy West’s reportage style image of a chef preparing pastry takes third place with an interesting low angle perspective that utilises the reflection of the subject as a key part of the composition. The use of black and white also enhances to the reportage style of the image and we’d hope forms part of a wider series of images of the subject.
