Working to a Brief: Assignment 5 LAUNCH
In this live show, Karl announces the details for our fifth ‘Working to a Brief’ assignment - a Coca-Cola product shoot.
Outlining the concept for the shoot, Karl explains the specific requirements, including the lighting, layout and submission deadline. He also shares some useful tips and answers further questions from members that will help guide you as you tackle this project.
You can find the complete brief, including visual sketches, mood board images and description, here.
Slightly more challenging than some of our previous briefs, this assignment will test your lighting control, composition decisions, and attention to detail.
Images must be sent in before the deadline of 16th June. You can submit your image using the form at the bottom of the brief. These will be reviewed in the follow-up live show on 24th June.
You'll find a number of classes within our product photography course that will be helpful for this assignment.

a small help for everyone who wants to try this:
I highly recommend using Coke Light / Coke Zero for the pour. I used original coke the first time, made a small mistake and covered half of the room and equiupment with sugar. Safe yourself the trouble of having to clean that sticky mess – was a joyful 3 hours cleaning session for me…
Thanks for sharing your experience, very useful info:) I will start the shooting this weekend, so perfect timing:).
You’re welcome. Good luck and success with you attempt Laszlo!
Hi Karl. It seems Coca-Cola’s branding these days has the logo wrapping horizontally, not vertically (where I live anyway). As the art director, are you ok with that, or would you prefer the logo vertical? I assume if this were a real brief it would be shot as is, right?
Hi Stephan, no problem if the coke cans you have are only that way.
so im having trouble finding slim can-in California-and more important is that the cans 12oz that I have, the Coca-cola label wraps at least 180 degrees around the can. so im unable to get the full logo in the shot
Hi David, the smaller cans are often uses as drinks mixers for bars but if you’re having trouble finding one just use a standard coke can is good.
Since we don’t see the chat window on replay could you pin or reply with the class that discusses how to create condensation on the surface of a can or bottle.
Hi there. You can find out how to create condensation in these two classes:
Are these the type of questions that you would ask during one of your product meetings with a art director?
Hi Pigboy, yes pretty much everything covered here is what you would discuss with an art director.
The replay doesn’t truly start until 22 minutes in, for those who were wondering and looked at the comments to check.
Thanks James. I kept reloading the page thinking it just wasn’t up yet. Didn’t think I had to wait 20 minutes 😆
Hi James they are trimmed the next day and republished without the pre-broadcast, the pre-broadcast unfortunately is necessary to check the feed and that everything is working but thank you for letting other members know in the meantime.
